You can turn a stored procedure query subject definition into a function that can be called from a calculation This can be handy if you have a stored procedure that encapsulates some complex business logic to return a scalar value or output parameter To make that procedure available to you in the creation of calculations, click the f(x) convert link, which brings up the dialog shown in Figure 15-21 From this dialog, you can select the output parameter that should be used as the return value or specify that the scalar return value of the stored procedure be used as the return value for your function You can optionally choose to delete the original stored procedure query subject definition, which you might want to do, because in this case it cannot be used as a query subject that returns a data result set If you want to see or delete the new function definition, go to the Search tab of the Tools pane and set the Class Type to Function When the search reveals the function you created, you will be able to see information on it, or you can right-click it in the search results and choose Delete to get rid of it Just make sure it is not referenced in any calculations before you delete it As mentioned, it is likely that all of the stored procedures that you need to access will probably already exist in your source database If they do not, but you determine that a stored procedure is necessary in your application, you should contact your DBA to request a stored procedure that will conform to your needs

Earlier in this chapter, we discussed using Oracle Data Guard as the best practice to achieve high availability and protection from planned and unplanned failures If media failures occur on the Database Machine and you do not have a Data Guard configuration, you have no choice but to recover the database using backups
